Contemporary Touchdown
03/6/2012Because of political reasons the Stedelijk Museum had to send two extension plans to the dustbin. To break through an emerging vacuum YYY proposed to situate a new typology at the Museumplein: besides Rietveld’s Van Goghmuseum with its extension and the transpierced Rijksmuseum, the new Stedelijk Museum could be densified with new program stacked on top of the monumental museum. The the monumental facades would not be ruined. A connecting program of everyday facilities could be distributed all over the building: congress-facilities, a café which transforms in a disco at night, a roof garden, etc. The program would be carefully linked with escalators and staircases. The everyday program guaranteed a lively building outside the opening hours of the museum. Like the Palais de Tokyo in Paris, it could become of the major attractors in Amsterdam again.
